How to Get Everything From Your Vacation Thinking of that winter vacation? Dreams of warm, sunny breezes, romantic strolls along the ocean, and late nights at neon dance clubs probably make you salivate. But as you make those final plans for fun in the sun, keep these three rules in mind so that your vacation at the shore doesn’t turn into an exorbitant time confined to a hotel room: * Keep Water Handy Romping in the ocean will dehydrate you more quickly than you think, particularly if you are not used to the weather at your destination. Consuming the minimum 64 ounces of water every day will not be enough to keep you hydrated. And no, that Frozen Daquiri you’re planning to sip all day won't do it either. You should be consuming more than ten (half pint) glasses of water a day to restore yourself while having all that fun in the sun, and even more (twelve to fifteen) if you plan on exercising or drinking alcohol. A little dehydration may not seem like a big deal, but it can really lower your pep. And dehydration left untreated can lead to headaches, cramps, constipation, and a general feeling of being tired while severe dehydration can be deadly. Don’t let dehydration take you away from the fun: make certain you’re consuming enough water. * Lather Up With Sunscreen I know, I know, this is your one chance this winter to get a real tan…but pass up the tanning impulse in the interest of your health and your skin. Bring UVA/UVB lotion with an SPF of 30 and reapply at least every couple of hours that you spend playing along the shore; and remember to apply the sunscreen 30 minutes before sun exposure and then reapply frequently if swimming or sweating. The closer to the equator you are, the stronger the UVA/UVB rays, and thus the potentially more harm you are doing to your skin. Too much sun can lead to burning, blistering, peeling, rashes, fever and nausea, not to mention skin cancer, including the most deadly--melanoma. And don’t forget to protect your eyes with sunglassesthat have UVA and UVB protection, too. Also, consider using a hat and light, long sleeve clothes for extra cover up if you are not trying to catch some rays--in moderation. * Consume With Care Whether you are touring nationally or internationally, you should pay attention to what you are consuming. Though local street food may be inexpensive, interestingly native, and very tempting, there may be more in it than you assumed. Dishes for sale at outside food stands is exposed to germs that could leave you rushing to the closest restroom for the remainder of your tour. If you are traveling internationally, it is strongly suggested that you avoid raw salad and unpeeled or uncooked fruits and vegetables, as the water that these uncooked items are washed with may have bacteria your body is not prepared for. Here are a few tips that are often neglected: make sure hot food comes hot; peel all raw fruits and vegetables; and drink only bottled water. Make sure it is a new bottle and not a refill. As you leave on your travels, keep these important suggestions in mind. Remember to be safe, responsible, and to use your best judgment as you travel. You can leave your work and worries at home, but remember to pack your common sense. -------------------- At www.worldwidegaytravel.com, we focus on gay and lesbian travel.
