Long before leather wallets came into being, leather pouches were more serviceable because coins were the only currency known. Wallets emerged when paper currency was introduced in the West during the seventeenth century. The first wallets were made of superior leather from cow or horse hide and were very durable.

Our modern leather wallets with all these card slots didn't exist until credit cards were introduced in the 1950s. About the only modification in wallets since then was the 1970s' introduction of Velcro. In 1995 Ken Obenski made a slimmer wallet, but today you can find leather wallets, or those from other materials, in a vast number of designs, shapes, and colors.
