Taking care of a pet is akin to taking care of a child, there are its ups and downs. For example you try your best to be a good parent but somehow your kid just cant stay out of trouble. The same goes for canine owners, you've taken him to obedience school, socialized him with other canines, and taught him acceptable behavior (and perhaps a few tricks), but somehow it happens he gets into a brawl or worse he attacks someone. As the owner you must be thinking it was the other canine that started it (Isn't it always?) and yours just went along at the heat of the moment, but before you know it, it's all aggressive. Its in these types of situations that you ask yourself What in gods name should I do?!! In order to stop a brawl or to prevent an attack, you must remember never to yell at them to stop, as they might think of the yelling as an encouragement to start brawling even harder. How to stop a dog fight? Look around you, and if there is a water hose nearby, try to spray them down, dont panic and aim the water jet at their legs and feet as they are more responsive to stimuli on their extremities rather than other places. If all these still couldnt bring to a standstill the brawl or attack, try to pull them apart, but there is a high chance of getting bitten. Do not grab them by the collars or the scruffs of their necks in the middle of a brawl or they might whip back and snap at you. It is best to have the other canines owner to be present at times like these, so that each owner can grab their pets tail and lift up their hind legs off the ground as this act will surprise them by throwing them off their balance, making it easier to pull them apart. However, if you are at the scene by yourself, then try to take charge of the aggressor by grabbing his tail and lifting his hind legs and then pulling him away from the other pet. TASER gun is another way of bringing to a close clashes or preventing attacks. Although this alternative might seem like a little extreme on the control matter, and even a little cruel, but it is the least painful as the pain suffered by the pet from the TASER blast is very mild compared to the pain of injuries they can get from a nasty brawl. Besides, using a TASER gun has no permanent damage to the attacking animal. Using a TASER is a fast and efficient way to stop not only clashes but also to stop dog attack. According to the statistics from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control (CDC) an estimated 368,245 persons were treated for canine bite related injuries in North America for the year 2001.The highest number of victims were children between the ages of 5 to 9. The electrical jolt from the TASER blast will knock the attacking animal to the ground. Once they are shocked, there should be ample time to subdue them. In the year 2003, canine bites accounted for $321.6 million in claims, as stated by the US based Insurance Information Institute while the number of canine deaths for 2005 was 13,498,254 as mentioned in a report by the American Pet Association. The North American Vet Society quoted that the average cost of medical fees for pets involved in clashes was $137.56 for each brawl in the year 2002. Therefore, based on the high amount of fatalities and injuries to both humans and pets it can be said that TASER gun is a great way to keep both humans and pets safe, besides helping in lowering the cost of pet medical bills. A case where TASER gun was used for dog control and to bring to a standstill an attack was published in The Times Herald-Record on April 13th 2006 where a Monroe police officer named Greg Witten used a TASER gun to subdue two aggressive pit bulls on a golf course. The two animals escaped their Still Road home and went on to menace golfers at the Monroe Country Club, who tried to defend themselves in return by using golf clubs. By zapping them two with a TASER gun twice, Witten has managed to force the animals to return home. You can never imagine your pet being in a brawl. However you will never know what could provoke them or another pet into brawling, or worse, attacking someone. Even if you certainly cant imagine having to TASER your pet, it is best to be prepared for such events, no matter how unlikely they might seem. As TASER guns are pretty inexpensive nowadays, it is a good idea to invest in one for your pets safety.
